Trauma therapy pioneer and psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk writes that “being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health”. A trauma-informed approach begins with understanding the inherent vulnerability of patients and families receiving palliative care. But even beyond this, we recognize that those who have experienced any degree of trauma in their lives are, as neuroscientist Stephen Porges describes, “wired” for protection rather than connection. One person’s idea of safety can be highly triggering to another, especially when coping with serious illness. This practical, interactive webinar seeks to empathize with and understand when safety is absent, while discussing multiple ways we can help patients regulate their mental/emotional distress and remain present and connected to their supportive team.
