This session will explore palliative care and First Nations perspectives of wellness while on a journey to meet the Ancestors. Current ways palliative care is provided in BC First Nations communities will be reviewed, including how colonization continues to impact care. Â
Abstract:
This session will explore palliative care and First Nations perspectives of wellness while on a journey to meet the Ancestors. Current ways palliative care is provided in BC First Nations communities will be reviewed, including how colonization continues to impact care. Reviewing cultural humility, will set the stage for the future state of culturally safer palliative care.
Objectives:
- Understand the First Nations perspective of palliative care in BC
- Review the historical impacts of colonization and how it currently affects  palliative care in First Nations communities
- Identify how to provide palliative care in a culturally safe(r) way
Nicole's Biography:Â
Nicole is a Registered Nurse (RN), with a Masters of Science in Nursing degree. She is also certified from the Canadian Nurses Association, with specialty practice in Hospice- Palliative Care since 2004. Â Nicole has worked in palliative care in various roles: staff nurse, educator, researcher, charge nurse, and Clinical Nurse Specialist. Â Currently she is the manager of the Chronic Conditions & Serious Illness team, at the First Nations Health Authority.
In her spare time, Nicole connects with her mental, physical, emotional, spiritual well being by digging in the garden, taking photos, and chasing her two sons, dog and husband around the green spaces of Coast Salish territory.
